There is something for everyone in the Turkish resort of Marmaris, from the sleek marina to the historic old town, and from beaches to bars. A tree-lined promenade runs alongside the beach, which features water sports as well as sun loungers. Long Beach then stretches between Marmaris and the nearby resort of Icemeler. The latter can make a good day trip destination if you feel like exploring another resort.
If you fancy a day trip a little further afield, the Greek island of Rhodes is under an hour’s catamaran ride away. Rhodes town offers incredible relics and architecture, including a Roman amphitheatre and a Greek acropolis.
Marmaris has Suleymaniye Hamami, an original Turkish hammam dating from the 1700s. A trip to the Turkish baths is a must when in Marmaris and many hotels can also provide a traditional experience complete with exfoliation and massage.
By night, Marmaris offers plenty of choice. Start with dinner at an archetypal Turkish restaurant and you can sample the local cuisine or dine on the freshest fish, eaten in the open air by the sea. Being a large resort, Marmaris also has a wide range of restaurants, featuring cuisines and dishes from all over the Mediterranean and even the world. Some of these are located within the hotels, while others are situated along the promenade or in other parts of town.
If you fancy a holiday that is typically Turkish, gulet cruises also depart from Marmaris. You could stay a few nights or a week in the resort, then book onto a gulet to see other places along the Turkish coast. During a gulet cruise, you sleep and eat on board, leaving the boat either to explore or for a swim in the open sea.
