For many, the glitzy resort of Marbella is the jewel in the Costa del Sol’s crown. The town is seen as an upmarket destination and is popular with celebrities as well as those seeking glamour. While it’s true that there’s plenty to do by day and night, Marbella also offers wonderful beaches, while the old town is a beacon of beauty and history.
If you’re in search of the right Marbella hotel, you will not be disappointed. From family hotels in Marbella that cater very well to those with children, to beach hotels in Marbella that ooze style and sophistication, this smart Spanish resort offers plenty of options.
The infamous golden mile is at the centre of it all and this stretch certainly features some very extravagant properties. There are lots of beaches too, with over 20 in the 15-mile stretch of coastline. The marina of Puerto Banus is about as glittering as it gets, with the sun bouncing off the luxury yachts as well as the sunglasses of well-heeled tourists.
Marbella’s old town offers a welcome reprieve from all the glitz and glamour. Narrow, twisting lanes feature whitewashed buildings that are bursting with colourful window boxes, and open out here and there into handsome squares with fountains and citrus trees, as well as lovely little cafes in which to quench your hunger or thirst. The old town is partly enclosed by Moorish castle walls, a remnant of the area’s Arabian days.
In the San Pedro part of town, you can even see ancient Roman baths and the remains of a Roman villa. A little further afield, Ronda makes a great day trip destination. The town is bisected by the majestic Tajo Gorge, with the original old town on one side and a new quarter with stylish shops, bars and restaurants on the other.
As well as gorgeous beaches, great shopping, lively nightlife and history, Marbella is a great destination for foodies. Cuisine in the resort draws upon local, fresh Andalusian produce, as well as the seafood and flavours of the Mediterranean. You can dine out in authentic Spanish style, and later be serenaded by a Flamenco show or if you prefer to eat at one of the town’s many international restaurants before hitting the busy bars and clubs to party till dawn.
