Manchester is a vibrant city, full of energy and creativity. It has its own Chinatown, a canal network, a number of major universities and a tram system. It also adjoins the fellow city of Salford, much of which has undergone a serious transformation in recent years, especially at Salford Quays where the new Media City is based.
Manchester was home to the ‘Madchester’ music scene that blossomed in the 1990s, and back then The Haçienda was one of the very first super clubs. Both The Haç, as it was locally known, and other Mancunian clubs from that time, have now been converted into luxury apartments - with a blue plaque marking The Boardwalk’s former site. If you want to sample those heady days of dance, the city’s longest running club night, Funkademia, still takes place every Saturday night at the Mint Lounge.
Two titanic football clubs call the city home, with Manchester United historically the more successfully, but Manchester City currently resurgent. A visit to Old Trafford or the City of Manchester Stadium is a must for football fans, and the Trafford Centre is close by, with a huge range of shops, eateries and even the Manchester Aquarium. At Trafford Park you’ll find the Imperial War Museum North, and Salford Quays is just across the way.
Whatever kind of food you fancy, Manchester boasts a thriving dining scene. From the ubiquitous high street chains serving child-friendly fare, to sophisticated Michelin-starred restaurants, this city has it all - with plenty in-between too. The city’s Chinatown is one of the UK’s biggest, so there’ll be no problem hunting down dim sum or Cantonese. Wilmslow Road in Rusholme is curry central, meanwhile, with an astonishingly long line of Asian restaurants to choose from. Locals and students alike always have their favourites, and during your stay you might even discover your own.
The Northern Quarter is well worth a look. This area has bloomed in recent times, and is now known as the place to find cosy, bohemian cafes and quirky, independent boutiques - as well as busy bars come nightfall.
