Los Angeles, aka the City of Angels, is home to Hollywood, Venice, Santa Monica and Malibu beaches, well-heeled Beverly Hills and theme parks too. This makes it a great destination for children and adults alike.
In and around California’s largest city, you can sunbathe on sandy beaches, shop til you drop, explore Hollywood or head out to Universal Studios or Disneyland, or even visit Orange County.
Shopping is one of the main reasons people flock to LA, and it generally holds true that clothing in particular is more reasonably priced than back home in Britain. Beverly Hills’ Rodeo Drive is a place to see and be seen, and also where you can shop to your heart’s content. This retail therapy doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag, as high street chain stores join designer boutiques in lining this upmarket area. Melrose Avenue is also a great destination for shoppers, as it’s packed with independent boutiques and vintage clothing stores.
Melrose leads you straight to Santa Monica and neighbouring Venice Beach. Santa Monica tends to project a more sophisticated image, while Venice Beach is known for muscle men and roller skaters, both of which make the most of the Californian sunshine by exercising - and posing - outdoors. There are plenty of shops, bars and eateries in the seaside area, so it’s easy to spend all day by the shore. Further out of town is Malibu, famed for its exclusive waterfront properties often owned by celebrities or the mega-rich.
When in Los Angeles, you must of course visit Hollywood. Home to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Walk of Fame, it’s easy to spend hours wandering the streets, searching for the star dedicated to your favourite movie star or musical icon. Up in the hills, the iconic Hollywood sign is clearly visible, leaving the world in no doubt as to the role of this part of town in the film industry.
