On the eastern tip of Mexico, facing the island of Cuba, is Cancun. Whatever you are seeking in a holiday, you are sure to find it here. Lovely clean sandy beaches, warm Caribbean sea, great nightlife, superb food, a host of accommodation options, unbelievable Mayan buildings and history all wrapped up in a resort which is very close to the airport. You can choose the busy, energetic hotel zone, with superb hotels right on the beach front or the quieter Riviera Maya, a little more relaxed. Cancun is a mid sized coastal resort with a long thin island joined to the mainland by bridges. There are world-class hotels, nightlife and shopping. But most visitors will be attracted to the wonderful beaches of the town and the surrounding area.
The Caribbean Sea with dazzling white-sand beaches and turquoise waters is so close to the town and the hotels, it is an irresistible draw. There are many beautiful beaches to explore, some with busy facilities, some with a restful air, all perfect for relaxing and enjoying the sunshine. But you can’t sit on a lounger all day, this is one of the most important diving areas in the world. Take the opportunity to visit remarkable coral reefs in the open sea and explore underwater caverns as well as the Mayan Barrier Reef, the second largest reef in the world. Water-sports, including scuba diving, jet skiing and parasailing are all available locally.
Most of the hotels and apartments can be found in the Hotel Zone. On the west side is Laguna Nichupte, a huge lagoon home to many marinas, waterfront restaurants, shopping malls and a few golf courses. It is the best point to enjoy the most amazing sun sets you are ever likely to see. There is every level of hotel here for you to choose from including five star luxury, all inclusive budget holidays, self catering apartments and everything in between! Shopping is not neglected, either, as it’s not too far to the United States, you will find international brand name products in large shopping malls plus Mexican handicrafts at reasonable prices.
In the aquarium's open-air section, you can touch sea urchins, stingrays and sea turtles. Or go and swim with Dolphins for an experience of your life. Or take a speedboat ride into the mangroves and see the wide variety of wild life.
Cancun is a golfer's heaven with first-class golf courses designed by the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman. That is, if you can keep your eye on the ball when you glimpse the amazing beauty of the Caribbean Sea.
Wonderful dining is all around you, restaurants with gourmet cuisines, including Mexican, French, Italian, American, Argentinean and Japanese, as well as so many others. Many of the restaurants have live music and with such choice of menus, you will really have difficulty deciding which one for tonight’s meal! Stroll along Boulevard Kukulkan to try and decide - breathtaking sunsets on the lagoon's piers, candlelit gardens, verandas in wood and glass - go on treat yourselves!
Cancun comes to life after dark with discos, live music in the hotels, dance clubs, bars, restaurants and live bands. The Hotel Zone offers night clubs with laser light shows and great atmosphere.
As an alternative, you can try the downtown area of the town, which offers great eating, shopping and entertainment. The locals all come here, so it has a real family friendly Latin feel and can be less expensive than the tourist areas.
You can’t come to this part of Mexico, the Yucatan Peninsula and not visit the most amazing Mayan ruins. Their legacy includes palaces, observatories, temple-pyramids and ceremonial sites. Many are in excellent condition to explore.
